การยกย่องเชิดชูเกียรติผู้ประกอบวิชาชีพทางการศึกษา
คุรุสภาในฐานะที่เป็นองค์กรวิชาชีพครูมีนโยบายในการที่จะส่งเสริมสนับสนุนและยกระดับมาตรฐานวิชาชีพครูให้อาชีพครูเป็นที่ยอมรับโดยทั่วไป เพราะอาชีพครูเป็นอาชีพที่สำคัญยิ่งต่อการพัฒนาเยาวชนของชาติ คณะกรรมการอำนวยการคุรุสภาพิจารณาเห็นว่าการพิจารณาให้รางวัลคุรุสภาแก่ครู ผู้ปฏิบัติหน้าที่อยู่ในปัจจุบันที่มีประวัติและผลการทำงานดีเด่นในทุกๆด้าน ทั้งในด้านความประพฤติ การปฏิบัติงานตามอุดมการณ์และหน้าที่ได้อย่างดีเยี่ยมจะทำให้ครูผู้ได้รับรางวัลเกิดความภาคภูมิใจ รู้สึกเป็นเกียรติเป็นศักดิ์ศรี เป็นขวัญกำลังใจในการที่จะทำคุณประโยชน์ให้แก่สังคมและประเทศชาติต่อไป ดังนั้นคุรุสภาจึงได้จัดให้มีการมอบรางวัลคุรุสภาแก่ครูที่ได้รับคัดเลือกให้เป็นครูผู้ปฏิบัติงานที่มีผลงานดีเด่น ซึ่งได้เริ่มดำเนินการมาตั้งแต่ พ.ศ. ๒๕๒๔ เป็นต้นมา (สำนักงานเลขาธิการคุรุสภา ๒๕๓๘ :๗๕)
ต่อมาคณะกรรมการคุรุสภา ได้ให้ความสำคัญต่อการยกย่องเชิดชูเกียรติผู้ประกอบวิชาชีพทางการศึกษา ตามพระราชบัญญัติสภาครูและบุคลากรทางการศึกษา พ.ศ. ๒๕๔๖ โดยได้ดำเนินการยกย่องเชิดชูเกียรติผู้ประกอบวิชาชีพ ตั้งแต่เริ่มประกอบวิชาชีพเป็นครูผู้ปฏิบัติการสอน ผู้บริหารสถานศึกษา ผู้บริหารการศึกษา และศึกษานิเทศก์ ไปจนถึงผู้ประกอบอาชีพที่ถึงแก่กรรม โดยมีผู้ทรงคุณวุฒิและผู้เชี่ยวชาญในสาขาต่างๆ ร่วมพิจารณา ซึ่งสอดคล้องกับข้อเสนอเชิงนโยบายการยกย่องเชิดชูครูผู้มีผลงานดีเด่นของสำนักงานปฏิรูปวิชาชีพครู สำนักงานคณะกรรมการการศึกษาแห่งชาติ (สำนักงานคณะกรรมการการศึกษาแห่งชาติ ๒๕๔๓ : ๔) ทั้งนี้เน้นการยกย่องในรูปของ “เงินและงาน” เพื่อนำไปพัฒนาการเรียนการสอนและพัฒนาเพื่อนครูต่อไป และให้สร้างกลไกเชื่อมโยงการยกย่องให้รางวัลครูของหน่วยงานหรือองค์กรต่างๆให้ต่อเนื่องเป็นบันไดวิชาชีพครู เพื่อให้การยกย่องครูผู้มีผลงานดีเด่นเป็นระบบและมีเครือข่ายในการนกย่องให้รางวัลครูที่มีการประสานงานและส่งเสริมสนับสนุนการทำงานร่วมกัน

พจนานุกรม ฉบับราชบัณฑิตยสถาน พ.ศ. ๒๕๒๕ ให้ความหมายคำว่า “ยกย่อง” หมายถึง เชิดชู และ “เชิดชู” หมายถึง ยกย่อง, ชมเชย
